Avatar Generators
Hate having your picture taken? Not comfortable putting photographs of yourself online? You can still add a picture to your blog profile by creating an avatar.
What's an avatar?
An avatar is a fanciful representation of yourself - it can be as realistic or fantastic as you'd like it to be - some people create animals or fantasy characters as avatars! For people who aren't comfortable in front of the camera, or have concerns about privacy, they're a neat option. Here are some websites where you can create your own avatar:
- Face Your Manga Create human avatars that look a bit like manga characters! This is an LAV personal favorite.
- Free Avatar Maker Contains over 5,000 symbolic photos to which you can add decoration and text
- South Park Avatar Generator Create an avatar that looks like one of the rambunctious cartoon kids from South Park
- Meez For those of who you want to dabble in 3-D, Meez can help. Requires account creation.

If your eyes just glazed over at the phrase "policies and guidelines," don't worry: creating guiding principles for your blog doesn't require assembling a task force or holding four-hour meetings. However, you should have a short document that explains why you're blogging, what you hope to achieve, and what general principles you'll follow. Ultimately your library blog should serve your patrons, so it's helpful to spend a little time thinking about how your blog can do that, and what strategies you'll use.
Here are some samples of guidelines from assorted library blogs:
